Montessori 6-9yrs

An Overview of the 6 – 9 Level Primary 2, 3 and 4

LANGUAGE

The goal of the 6 – 9 language programme is to further develop a child’s reading, writing and comprehension skills, to expand their knowledge of the world around them, extend their vocabulary and to evolve into confident communicators.

Read Aloud

  • Our Read Aloud programme exposes children to a rich variety of literature, enhances their vocabulary and introduces them to a variety of genres and story patterns.
  • Parents are frequently invited into the classrooms to read books to the children.

Reading

  • While a phonetic approach lays the foundation for reading in the early years, students also learn sight words, as well as the concept of print, word, sentence and story.
  • Children are encouraged to read every day in the classroom and at home.  Children want to share what they can do!

Comprehension

  • As children begin to read, they first respond to questions verbally and as their reading becomes more proficient, they write their answers using a word or a simple sentence based on multiple choice selections and short story cards.
  • Through novel study, our reading book series, comprehension cards and other resources, children begin to develop the skill of locating an answer in the text and responding to questions using full sentences.

Writing

  • Children learn to use a good pencil grip, develop correct letter formation in both print and cursive style, and to apply the upper and lower case letters appropriately.

Grammar, Punctuation and Language Mechanics (Writing Conventions)

  • Children use language materials that include templates for simple sentence analysis
They are expected to demonstrate their understanding of capital letters and punctuation rules through their creative writing.

Spelling and Vocabulary

  • Students build their vocabulary skills through their comprehension and composition work. Comparative vocabulary cards are used to reinforce concepts such as antonyms, synonyms and compound words.
  • Weekly spelling words are given to children for homework to reinforce spelling rules, words most frequently used, and words that apply to a particular comprehension exercise or an area of study.  Students apply the spelling words through various exercises to demonstrate their understanding.

Creative Writing

  • Our students learn about story building through interesting exercises, and they learn how to plan, draft, edit and revise a story.   They develop skills in descriptive, persuasive, expository and narrative writing and learn how to write letters, journals and poetry.

Oral Presentations

  • Opportunities to develop good oral communication, and to build a student’s confidence, are provided by reading aloud to others and presenting projects to peers and parents.

MATH AND GEOMETRY

The Montessori 6 – 9 materials provide students with concrete experiences in order to learn important math and geometry concepts.  Once a solid understanding has been reached, the children move towards the abstract.  Through the use of a variety of concrete materials, students frequently gain advanced knowledge in all operations.

Number Sense

  • Understanding of  the number system, estimations, place values
  • Problem solving—addition, subtraction, multiplication, division
  • Understanding relationships between whole numbers, simple fractions and decimals.

Algebra & Functions

  • Select symbols, operations, and properties to represent, describe, simplify and solve simple number relationships

Measurement & Geometry

  • Learn tools to quantify the properties of objects
  • Describe and compare the attributes of plane and solid geometric figures, show relationships and solve problems

Statistics, Data Analysis & Probability

  • Conduct simple probability experiments by determining the number of possible outcomes and make simple predictions
  • Approach problems by applying strategies, skills and concepts in finding solutions and moving beyond a problem by generalizing situations.

THE CULTURAL SUBJECTS

Our 6 – 9 Cultural Subjects enrich the children’s understanding in all aspects of the world in which they live.  Field trips, visiting speakers, books, videos and the Internet play an important role in all cultural studies. Our curriculum is focused on the process and issues of science in the study of life, the laws and structure of the Universe and how humanity has struggled throughout history to put our understanding to practical use.

Life Sciences

Botany & Zoology

  • Students learn about the life, growth, structure and classification of plants and animals and their interactions with humans.

Earth & Physical Sciences

Geography

  • The Universe, the Solar System and Earth
  • The Universe and the elements that affect its change
  • Movement of the Planet Earth and its consequences
  • Lithosphere – understanding the earth’s formation
  • Atmosphere—its layers and functions
  • Hydrosphere – interpreting cloud formations and the water cycle
  • The Biosphere and human interaction

History

  • Timeline of Life”—exploring the possible origins of earth and how life may have started
  • Introduction to the “Timeline of Man”
