Volunteer Opportunities
Class Parents:Each year teachers need support with certain activities, and school-wide events need class-room level coordination. Class Parents fill both of these roles. Teachers generally call upon 2 people to help as Class Parents by June for the next school year. Social Events:Events help to build a sense of community and are most often the result of the creativity of those willing to become involved. We have seen formal balls, relaxed parties, golf outings, and beach gatherings. There is usually a great deal of planning and preparation involved so it would be anticipated there would only be one event in either the second or third term. Whether you yourself plan the event, or join a team of volunteers, please ensure that the mission and philosophy of the school is kept in mind. Party anyone? Readathon:This very successful PTA fundraising event, held every year, involves the children gathering sponsors and receiving donations for each book they read. We require a volunteer team each year to develop a theme, prepare documents, develop and support special readathon events, and take care of the many details that are required to run such an activity. Spring Fair:This is the PTA’s main fundraising event and takes place in May. You can just imagine the number of people it takes to have book stalls, jumble sales, plant stalls, food stalls, game stalls, bake stalls, entertainment… the list goes on! We encourage every family to find some way to contribute to this event. Please respond to requests for help that begin to appear in March. Community Service Projects:This is an opportunity to do some pioneering work for the school. While we participate in some community drives such as KBB clean up days, we are looking to have this area expanded to encompass ongoing small student group commitments to a variety of service learning opportunities. If you have good contacts in the community and enjoy organizing activities you could be the pioneer we’re looking for! Office Support:We are always appreciative of those willing to help with the less glamorous tasks, like coordinating mailings which involves labeling and stamping envelopes, collating and copying documents. If you have a spare hour between 2 and 3'oclock in the afternoons, please let us know. Pizza Lunch:The Pizza Lunch programme is an ongoing fundraiser. Each term, parents have the opportunity to place advanced orders for their children to have pizza for lunch approximately twice each month. Pizza Lunch volunteers, assist with pizza pick up, delivery and distribution. Photography:We are sure there are some pretty amazing amateur photographers amongst our parent body. If you would like to contribute some time to take pictures for the yearbook, Somersfield Star, school brochures and newspaper for public relations, please let us know. Let's not leave our memories to chance. Parent Ambassadors:Our parent ambassadors ensure that families who are new to the school are made to feel welcome and comfortable, and helped to know our traditions and routines. In addition to welcoming our new families, parents ambassadors are called upon to conduct tours of the facilities during open houses. Library Support:Parent volunteers are responsible for checking in and out books, assisting students with book research, and desk coverage during the lunch periods. If you are interested in assisting in the library, please contact our School Librarian, Nancy Smith on nsmith@somersfield.bm Listening to Readers - 3 to 6 level:We are looking for volunteers who would like to give an hour of their time each week to listen to our 3-6yr old children read. Our aim is to give the children additional time to practice their skills and increase their fluency. Please email lcox@somersfield.bm or ssteede@somersfield.bm if you have any questions. |
